Aminata Namasia, Deputy Minister of Primary, Secondary, and Technical Education (EPST), expressed her regret over the fire that broke out at Mwanga High School in Kolwezi, Lualaba Province, on Monday, April 24, 2023. Through her Twitter account, Aminata Namasia reassured the families of the injured children that the Ministry of Primary, Secondary, and Technical Education (EPST) is handling and monitoring the situation through provincial education officials. “We share the pain of all the families affected by this incident. Our hearts go out to all our students and children who are suffering from this unfortunate event. Our representatives at the provincial level are already looking into the situation and examining how the ministry can respond,” the tweet reads. This fire, the cause of which is not yet known, has, according to the government spokesperson, resulted in injuries and trauma among children, most of whom had to escape from the roof of one of the school’s buildings. Both the national and provincial governments have confirmed that no loss of life has been reported. Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya, during a briefing held on Monday, also confirmed that all injured students have been treated and that a case has been opened with the prosecutor’s office to determine liability.
