National examinations that certify skills acquired at each level of education

Certifying examinations are key milestones in the school pathway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They assess learners’ skills and certify their level of training. The Ministry of National Education and New Citizenship organises three major national examinations: EXETAT, ENAFEP, and TENASOSP.

ENAFEP — National end-of-primary examination

Certification at the end of the primary cycle

The ENAFEP (Examen national de fin d’études primaires) marks the end of the primary cycle (grade 6). It assesses foundational learning in reading, writing, mathematics, and other core subjects.

Successful candidates receive the certificate of end of primary studies, which gives access to the terminal cycle of basic education (CTEB — grades 7 and 8).

Main features:

  • For all pupils in grade 6 of primary school
  • Assesses core skills: French, mathematics, sciences, civic education
  • Awards the certificate of end of primary studies
  • Allows access to the terminal cycle of basic education (CTEB)

TENASOSP — National school and vocational orientation test

Certification at the end of the terminal cycle of basic education

The TENASOSP (National school and vocational orientation test) marks the end of the terminal cycle of basic education (CTEB), i.e. grade 8.

It assesses consolidated learning from primary and CTEB and leads to the certificate of end of basic education, which opens access to secondary school (Humanities).

  • For all pupils in grade 8 (end of CTEB)
  • Assesses consolidated basic education skills

  • Allows access to secondary education (Humanities)

EXETAT — National examination

Certification at the end of secondary school

The EXETAT (Examen d’État) is the national examination that marks the end of secondary studies in the DRC. It is for final-year pupils in general, technical, and professional humanities.

It assesses knowledge and skills acquired throughout secondary school and awards the State diploma, the credential for higher education or entry into working life.

Main features:

  • Held annually at national level
  • Papers adapted to each stream (general, technical, professional)
  • Awards the State diploma recognised nationwide
