On the instructions of the governor of North Kivu province, Major General Peter Chirimwami, it was decided to waive the registration fees for the State Exam for graduating students displaced by war. Shalumoo Tsambali Salomon, Provincial Director of North Kivu 2, announced this on Wednesday, February 28, in Butembo during an informational meeting with parent committees, union representatives, civil society actors, and others involved in the education system regarding the new measures taken by the provincial authorities. Mathe Saanane, a civil society leader who reported on the meeting, stated that this decision was made to ensure that all children and final-year students displaced by war could participate in the certification exams with peace of mind, given their vulnerable situation. The provincial authority’s decision also reduces the participation fee for non-displaced students from 130,000 FC to 120,000 FC, as initially set in the provincial decree. Civil society, which welcomes these measures taken by the provincial authorities, calls on security services to redouble their efforts to ensure the safety of students and infrastructure so that children can sit the exams without hindrance when the time comes.
