National examinations that certify skills acquired at each level of education
Certifying examinations are key milestones in the school pathway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They assess learners’ skills and certify their level of training. The Ministry of National Education and New Citizenship organises three major national examinations: EXETAT, ENAFEP, and TENASOSP.
Certification at the end of the primary cycle
The ENAFEP (Examen national de fin d’études primaires) marks the end of the primary cycle (grade 6). It assesses foundational learning in reading, writing, mathematics, and other core subjects.
Successful candidates receive the certificate of end of primary studies, which gives access to the terminal cycle of basic education (CTEB — grades 7 and 8).
Certification at the end of the terminal cycle of basic education
The TENASOSP (National school and vocational orientation test) marks the end of the terminal cycle of basic education (CTEB), i.e. grade 8.
It assesses consolidated learning from primary and CTEB and leads to the certificate of end of basic education, which opens access to secondary school (Humanities).
Certification at the end of secondary school
The EXETAT (Examen d’État) is the national examination that marks the end of secondary studies in the DRC. It is for final-year pupils in general, technical, and professional humanities.
It assesses knowledge and skills acquired throughout secondary school and awards the State diploma, the credential for higher education or entry into working life.
